2/16 Hunter Valentine @ Black Cat, Washington, DC 2/15/16

Hunter Valentine – Farewell for Now Tour

Armed With Pop-Punk Vibes
Now based in Brooklyn, the band started making waves in Toronto in 2005 when original members Kiyomi McClosky (lead vocals and guitar) and Laura Petracca (vocals and drums) formed the group and came out with their first self-financed EP.

Since then, Hunter Valentine has released three full-length albums. Working with such producers as Greg Nori (Sum 41, Iggy Pop), Julius “Juice” Butty (Alexis on Fire, City and Color, Protest the Hero), and Ian Blurton (The Weakerthans, Amy Milan, Cursed, Lowest of the Low). Their blatant disregard for a typical girl-group sound has garnered them international attention. The girls’ success has taken them on tour around the world and back, opening for such artists as Sum 41 and Cyndi Lauper.

With even greater accomplishment on the horizon, Hunter Valentine has solidified their lineup in 2014. The band now has the ability to shake any audience to its core. The group will be featured on VH1’s Make or Break: The Linda Perry Project in July 2014 and will be releasing their fourth full-length album shortly thereafter. The band has paved their own way in the realm of edgy female performers.

Revolution in Orbit

A duet album that extends an ongoing musical conversation between Shalabi and Christoff, this album recorded at La Sala Rossa builds on a dialogue between Cairo and Montreal. Inherent to these recordings is an urgency to always question both musically and politically, the tones expand on a dialogue between the musicians about their experiences working within grassroots arts and activist worlds that are inherently connected to growing movements to overturn injustice

Sam Shalabi wrote in The Wire magazine about this album

http://www.thewire.co.uk/audio/btr/below-the-radar-16/14

Our duo began as a friendship that grew out of long conversations about music, social justice and politics and then evolved naturally into this musical dialogue. The core of our approach is to continue that conversation and hear how these two mother instruments (maybe the two most weighted down by their own respective traditions and tropes) might speak directly and simply to each other through improvisation. This piece is named after a Nubian Island in Aswan, in Upper Egypt and is inspired by it and music from the region

Sam Shalabi is an Egyptian-Canadian composer and improviser, living between Montreal, Quebec and Cairo, Egypt. Beginning in punk rock in the late 70s, his work has evolved into a fusion of experimental, modern Arabic Music that incorporates traditional Arabic, shaabi, noise, classical, text, free improvisation and jazz. He has released 5 solo albums (including ‘ On Hashish’- a musical meditation on German writer Walter Benjamin, ‘Osama’, an audio collage on arabophobia in the wake of 9/11 and his most recent ‘music for Arabs’), 5 albums with Shalabi Effect, a free improvisation quartet that bridges western psychedelic music and Arabic Maquam (scales) and 3 albums with Land Of Kush (experimental 30 member orchestra, for which he composes). He has appeared on over 30 albums and toured Europe, North America and North Africa. Current projects include the release of the 6th Shalabi Effect album, a duo album with Stefan Christoff, two albums on the Italian label Sagittarius, with Beirut, Turkish and Egyptian musicians and a recent tour in the eastern U.S with Alvarius B, where Sam played solo Ud (Arabic Lute). He is also premiering a new composition for ud and electronics in a series of performances in late 2014 as well as releasing an album with The Dwarves Of East Agouza, a Cairo based trio with Maurice Louca and Alan Bishop in 2015

Stefan Christoff is a writer, community organizer and musician living in Montreal, as a pianist Stefan has worked on numerous projects over recent years including Duets for Abdelrazik, an album aiming to express solidarity with the struggle of Sudanese-Canadian Abousfian Abdelrazik who was exiled, jailed and tortured in Sudan with the active complicity of the Canadian government. Also Stefan worked on a series of recordings at La Sala Rossa, including two albums of duets with Sam Shalabi on oud, the first родина and the second Flying Street both are rooted in a developing collaboration extending between Cairo and Montreal. Stefan also has released two eps, the first Temps libre recorded within the context of the Quebec student strike and the second Wire Tones recorded with double bass player David Parker in Kingston, Ontario at the Artel. Stefan is active in Montreal within both activist and artistic initiatives and works a lot on projects around the Howl arts collective. listen to sounds by Stefan at : soundcloud.com/spirodon

Lyrics:

We set fire to our bed sheets and filled the room with smoke,
The passion inside our airways meant the flames inside would choke,
Eventually all the raging fires must turn to ash,
If I could understand the fuel I’d understand the whiplash,

We’re a bonfire of bad liars mixed with cheap regret,
Cobain fuelled love affair caught in the fishers net,
It’s hard to tell, we belong in this hell,
Burning up in our shell, it’s what we always do

I’ll send a letter to who I used to be,
Remind him that just because he’s in love,
Doesn’t mean it’d more,
Than it seems,
Save me from you, I didn’t know the truth,

I don’t care about,
The way you look at him,
I swear it

I don’t care about,
The way you see my beating heart,
Sleeping in my mouth,

Take it all away,
Please I don’t want to feel again,
It’s all just too much this way,
I don’t want to feel again,

I’ll send a letter to who I used to be,
Remind him that just because he’s in love,
Doesn’t mean it’s more,
Than it seems,
Save me from you, I didn’t know the truth,

I lost myself in your smile,
It told me that with you, I could fly for miles,
And gravity didn’t care about,
The South East London boy with his head in the clouds,

And I’m not sad,
I’m just sick of this feeling,
Of empty promises,
And late night healing

Opinion: Alternate Tunings for Rocksmith 2014

With the addition of this week’s Radiohead DLC, Ubisoft SF have revealed that there is an option available to them to use Custom Tunings. As a result of this we have true tunings for both Optimistic and My Iron Lung by Radiohead. Now that the cat is out of the bag, what are some other bands with alternate tunings that could appear in future downloadable content for Rocksmith 2014?

I had some fun with this list!

Sonic Youth “Titanium Expose” (EGDGED)

I first heard this song in a skateboard video called “Welcome to Hell” (google that and you might see a familiar name) I always thought it sounded almost “alien,” would love to play it.

Pavement “Type Slowly” (Open D)

Pavement is a pretty underrated 90s Alternative band, if you might recall Paul had one of their CDs on his desk when I visited Ubisoft SF in 2011. Maybe he was waiting for the tuning options? Pavement has had one song in a music game, in case you missed it.

Goo Goo Dolls “Iris” (B-D-D-D-d-d)

Did the Goo Goo Dolls use weird tunings because they were bad at playing guitar? Or were they just looking for that distinct sound to differentiate them from the other decaffeinated post-grunge bands they were surrounded by? Either way, Iris is definitely a song that would be fun to learn.

Soundgarden “Rusty Cage” (Drop B in standard variation Tuning – B-A-D-G-B-E)

We need more Soundgarden, all the Soundgarden preferably.

Opeth “Reverie/Harlequin Forest” (Open Dm)

Opeth is definitely up there with some of my favourite bands, I was surprised to learn that the entire Ghost Reveries album was played in Open Dm. This is one of my favourite songs on the album, but really any Opeth would be great, and most of it is in standard.

Nile “Sarcophaus” (Drop A – AADGBE)

Let’s get a bit heavier since we are talking about odd tunings, Nile fulfils that for sure. Could the game pick up Drop A though? I guess we have to wait and find out.

Neil Young “Cinnamon Girl” (Double Drop D)

I actually had no idea this song was in Double Drop D until I looked into it… Ok, I’ll be honest I had no idea “Double Drop D” was a thing. The more you know right? Neil Young was actually rumoured to be in the first Rocksmith, not sure what happened but let’s fix that soon.

Type O Negative “Christian Woman” (B Tuning)

Vampire music! I assume that the tuning went that low to match Peter Steele’s hauntingly low vocals, RIP.

The Melvins “Boris” (Drop A — AADGBE)

We already had a Drop A band, but you can’t talk about drop tunings without giving some love to The Melvins. This song actually inspired the name of the Japanese experimental rock band, Boris.

There’s some variety for you, can you think of other bands that use off tunings that would be welcome additions to the Rocksmith 2014 catalog?

Besides Led Zeppelin of course…
