Sudden Sway, Solo – Store Detective Man (1988)

Track 2 from the 1988 album “’76 Kids Forever” by the brilliant Sudden Sway.

WIKIPEDIA:
Sudden Sway were a pop group from Peterborough, England, formed in 1980. They recorded two sessions for John Peel and released three albums before splitting up in the early 1990s.

The band was formed in 1980 by Mike McGuire (vocals) and Steve Rolls (Guitar) after disbanding 1st generation punk band The Now. They recruited Pete Jostins (Bass), Shaun Foreman (Guitar & Keyboards) and Colin Meech (Drums), with various others contributing in their early days. They were initially influenced by bands such as A Certain Ratio and Shriekback. Their first releases were two self-financed singles, “Jane’s Third Party” and the To You, With Regard EP, in 1980 and 1981 respectively. The latter was sufficiently successful to attract major-label interest from CBS and Virgin Records, but after a further single on their own ‘Chant’ label, and with guitarist Simon Childs added as a permanent member, they signed a deal with Warners subsidiary Blanco y Negro, debuting on the label in 1986 with eight versions of the single “Sing Song”. After releasing the Spacemate package – a double LP, book, poster, set of cards and instruction manual, packaged together in a soap box container and designed by Jon Wozencroft, the band moved on to indie label Rough Trade Records, where they would stay for the rest of their career. Their fondness for remixes was evident on their first Rough Trade release, a 7-inch EP featuring eight, 1 minute songs and titles “Autumn Cut Back Job Lot Offer”, released in early 1987. The following year, they released their second album, ’76 Kids Forever, which they described as a “soap opera musical”. With Childs departing, the band continued for one final effort, 1990’s Ko-Opera album, before splitting up.

The band recorded two sessions for John Peel’s BBC Radio 1 programme, in 1983 (Let’s Evolve, Relationships) and 1984 (A Walk in the Park, Problem-Solving Broadcasts 1-3, T Minus Tranquility), the first released as an EP in 1986. They also made an appearance on Whistle Test, performing “Packet of Vacuum”.

LYRICS

I don’t want to lose my voice, even if you feel annoyed
I don’t want to break the promises I’ve made

When depression hits your soul, wakes up feelings you don’t want
But I’ll never break the promises I’ve made

I will lie, hurting myself, I will die, hiding sadness

Leave me when I’m bad, throw me to the fire
Just another sound, hidden in the silence

Sailing in the sea of fakes, failing in the test of life
But the truth will never, break what we agreed

Buffering the video file, squeezing fruit to have the juice
These will never break the promises I’ve made

I will show, my best smile, it’s my part, when I throw away my lies

Leave me when I’m bad, throw me to the fire
Just another sound, hidden in the silence

One day, will this world show, the real feelings of human beings?
Until that day, we will have to stand, this misleading and dishonest nightmare
Whenever, and wherever you go you find dusky souls cheating themselves
Connections, between heart, brain and tongue are lost and broken forever

Forever, we won’t find a way to heal
Whatever, healing is not in our hands
And never, chemicals have helped at all
Be clever, to be slept or disconnect from the world

Viva La Pola! 2007 – GBH (2)

Viva La Pola! 2007, Summer Revolution Rock Festival, Monumenti, Pula, July 28. The Katarina-Monumenti area is on the northern part of the Pula bay. This is a big ex-military complex with several abandoned barracks, magazines, and different army buildings. After the military left, people started using the space for music and arts festivals. GBH are an English punk rock band, formed in 1978 by vocalist Collin Abrahall and guitarist Colin “Jock” Blyth. GBH were early pioneers of English hardcore punk, often nicknamed “UK82” One of the most uncompromising bands in the world. GBH originally formed in 1979 in Birmingham, England, initially known as Charged GBH, to avoid confusion with a band similarly named, later dropping the prefix after it was discovered no other band existed. Their first album, City Baby Attacked By Rats, was released in 1982 to critical acclaim and its follow up, City Baby’s Revenge, released in 1983 fortified the typical GBH sound – noisy and distorted hardcore punk rock. All through the 80’s and 90’s GBH continued to release records and tour the world. GBH have toured everywhere, extensively in the U.S.A., through Mexico to Brazil and Argentina, from Israel and across Europe to Poland and even in Japan. Bands like Metallica, Nirvana, Sepultura, Slayer(who covered Sick Boy on their recent punk covers C.D.) have all cited GBH as an influence. 2002 sees the release of a new album Ha Ha and that is their best in years. Another album, another world tour, and with 28 years under their belt, GBH is bigger and better than ever! Currently the band are working on songs for a new cd and doing one off gigs around europe.
