Arriving for MTV EMAs, Green Day frontman says American civil liberties are under attacks

Arriving at the annual MTV European music awards – this year in Rotterdam, Holland – Green Day said the civil liberties of Americans are under attack and that “we need to fight back.”
The American rock group, who received the Global Icon prize at this year’s event, was asked who they would like their fans to vote for in the U.S. election.
Lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong, said that right now he thought a “down-ballot is really important,” meaning that people should vote in all national and local political contests – not just for the presidency.
“Big thing is getting the right liberal brain inside the supreme court,” he said.
The veteran punk rockers closed the raucous show with their anti-establishment anthem “American Idiot.”
Fellow American rocker group One Republic said their best hope would be if “a third party candidate just comes out of nowhere.”
“Just like, ‘I’m here. Vote for me,” said frontman Ryan Tedder.
British recording artist Charli XCX said she believed having Donald Trump as president would be “absolutely disastrous.”
“And I really, really hope that he doesn’t (win),” she said, adding that she’s behind Hilary Clinton, “100-percent.”
While they were happy to share their views on the hot political topic, Nathan Followill from Kings of Leon stayed tight-lipped over which candidate he’s behind.
“I already voted,” he said. “But you know, who you voted for and how much does your wife weigh? Two questions you should never answer.”
This year’s big MTV EMAs winner was Justin Bieber who walked away with three awards.
The pop star, who didn’t attend the show, won Best Song this time around for his smash “Sorry,” and also took away the title of Best Canadian Act. His army of so-called Beliebers earned him his third crown of the night, Biggest Fans, in online voting via Twitter and Instagram that closed shortly before the show started.
Lady Gaga, also among the absentees, won Best Female and Best Look. The awards were colored purple this year to honor the late Prince.
Shawn Mendes won in the Best Male category.
Another Canadian took Best Video, with The Weeknd featuring Daft Punk winning for Starboy.
Dutch DJ Martin Garrix kept the home crowd happy by picking up two awards — Best Electronic and Best World Stage — and teamed up with Rexha to perform a duet of “In the Name of Love.”
Host Bebe Rexha also provided one of the more surreal performances of the night by singing her single “I’ve Got U” while dancing on and around a giant faux-fur letter U, complete with eyes that followed her moves.
Beyonce was tied with Bieber for the most nominations — five — leading into the awards show, but was shut out. Queen Bey was in good company; Britain’s Adele was up for four awards, including Best Song for her single “Hello,” but also failed to pick up a single prize.

You’ll have to forgive the poor camerawork, it’s very difficult to hold the camera perfectly still while zoomed in that far.
