Green Day is an American punk rock band formed in 1987 by lead vocalist and guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist and backing vocalist Mike Dirnt. For much of their career the band has been a trio with drummer Tré Cool. In 2012 guitarist and backing vocalist Jason White became a full member after playing in the band as a session and touring guitarist for 13 years. Cool replaced former drummer John Kiffmeyer in 1990, prior to the recording of the band’s second studio album, Kerplunk (1992).
Green Day was originally part of the punk scene at the DIY 924 Gilman Street club in Berkeley, California. The band’s early releases were from the independent record label Lookout! Records. In 1994, its major label debut Dookie released through Reprise Records became a breakout success and eventually sold over 10 million copies in the U.S. Green Day was widely credited, alongside fellow California punk bands Sublime, Bad Religion, the Offspring, and Rancid, with popularizing and reviving mainstream interest in punk rock in the United States.
Green Day’s three follow-up albums, Insomniac (1995), Nimrod (1997), and Warning (2000) did not achieve the massive success of Dookie, though they were still successful, with Insomniac and Nimrod reaching double platinum and Warning reaching gold status. The band’s rock opera, American Idiot (2004), reignited the band’s popularity with a younger generation, selling five million copies in the United States. The band’s eighth studio album, 21st Century Breakdown, was released in 2009 which achieved the band’s best chart performance to date. 21st Century Breakdown was followed up by a trilogy of albums called ¡Uno!, ¡Dos!, and ¡Tré! released in September, November and December 2012 respectively.
They are one of the world’s best-selling groups of all time, having sold more than 75 million albums and singles worldwide. The group has won five Grammy Awards: Best Alternative Album for Dookie, Best Rock Album for American Idiot, Record of the Year for “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, Best Rock Album for the second time for 21st Century Breakdown and Best Musical Show Album for American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording. In 2010, a stage adaptation of American Idiot debuted on Broadway. The musical was nominated for three Tony Awards: Best Musical, Best Scenic Design and Best Lighting Design, losing only the first. Also in 2010, Green Day were ranked number 91 in the VH1 list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”. In 2014, the band were announced as nominees for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, their first year of eligibility.

You leapt from crumbling bridges watching cityscapes turn to dust
Filming helicopters crashing in the ocean from way above
Got the music in you baby,
Tell me why
Got the music in you baby,
Tell me why
You’ve been locked in here forever and you just can’t say goodbye
Kisses on the foreheads of the lovers wrapped in your arms
You’ve been hiding them in hollowed out pianos left in the dark…
Go and sneak us through the rivers,
Flood is rising up on your knees
Come out and haunt me
I know you want me
Come out and haunt me
Sharing all your secrets with each other since you were kids
Sleeping soundly with the locket that she gave you clutched in your fist…
When you’re all alone
I will reach for you
When you’re feeling low
I will be there too
The Green Day singer spoke on what was happening in the US at the concert in Toronto.
Green Day – American Idiot – U.C. Berkeley, Live, 4-16-13, front row, Greek Theatre. Billie Joe: “It’s such a trip to think that all of these songs are basically from here… or about here, I should say.”
Over 60 fans camped out overnight so that they would get a spot in the 1st row center. This actually worked out well for the many fans who came up from L.A. because that way they didn’t have to spring for a hotel room! 😛
The fans went wild when Green Day began this song and at 3:33, a crowd surfer goes right over us. 😛
Billie Joe frequently put on many of the items that the fans threw on stage, items such as hats, feather boas, sunglasses, and a 924 Gilman bumper sticker, which Billie then attached to his guitar during ‘2000 Light Years Away’. Green Day got its start at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, California.
Several of Billie Joe’s relatives also came to this concert. One person in my group recognized and then met a few of Billie’s brothers and sisters while we were waiting in line, and his nephew was also there, and he was later brought up on stage during the set’s second song.
After the 10th song, Billie Joe took a pair of requests from the audience, saying that that “we’ll play anything you want.” ‘Geek Stink Breath’ and ‘2000 Light Years Away’ were the winners.
Because the Greek Theatre has a 10pm curfew, Green Day started much earlier than usual at 7:30, when it was still light out.
